Job Description:
Title: CNC Machinist Reports To: Tool Room Supervisor Basic Job
Description : We are seeking a skilled CNC Machinist to support a
dynamic, low-volume, high-mix job shop environment, combining
hands-on machining with Mastercam-based CAD/CAM programming and
process optimization for 2D and 3D vertical CNC machining
operations. The role requires proficiency in Mastercam for offline
programming to support precision machining and toolroom activities,
as well as setup and operation of Fadal, Haas, and Mazak vertical
machining centers. The ideal candidate will apply best practices to
improve machining efficiency, extend cutting tool life, and control
tooling costs. This position works closely with engineering,
estimating, and production teams to provide support, ensuring
manufacturability and production feasibility of complex components.
The CNC Machinist plays a key role in both new product launches and
ongoing continuous improvement initiatives, with a strong focus on
high-feed machining technologies, cost savings, and process
stability. Responsibilities: Program CNC vertical and horizontal
machining centers using Mastercam for both 2D and 3D toolpaths;
create and post programs to machines. Review customer TPD drawings
or blueprints to identify material type, grade, and thickness;
interpret GD&T and machining tolerances. Write basic CNC
programs directly at the machine using the HMI interface when
needed. Develop setup instructions and maintain a Mastercam cutting
tool library tailored to job requirements. Select and manage
high-speed cutting tools, determining optimal speeds and feeds
based on material; coordinate with tooling vendors to optimize
machining throughput. Set up and operate CNC mills, lathes, and
manual equipment (e.g., Bridgeport-style mills) for both production
and engineering support. Assemble machined components using jigs,
fixtures, hand tools, and power tools as required. Inspect and
validate part dimensions using precision measuring tools. Secure
first-piece approvals from Quality Control before releasing
production runs. Manage the daily workflow of CNC machining,
including prioritization based on machine availability and manpower
needs. Perform daily preventative maintenance and monitor coolant
concentrations on all VMCs. Submit maintenance tickets and
coordinate equipment service or repairs with the Maintenance
Department. Support estimating with process development and tooling
cost inputs. Collaborate with engineering during concept
development to evaluate and improve machining fixture designs in
Mastercam. Coach and mentor CNC operators in program calling, basic
setups, and best practices. Perform additional duties as assigned
to support team flexibility and shop efficiency. Skills and
Abilities: Strong operation monitoring skills with the ability to
observe gauges, indicators, and machine output to ensure equipment
is running properly. Proficient in controlling and adjusting
machine operations to maintain optimal performance and part
quality. Experienced in quality control analysis, including
performing inspections, interpreting measurements, and evaluating
part conformance to specifications. Working knowledge of Geometric
Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) and the ability to
interpret complex engineering drawings. Effective problem-solving
ability, with a systematic approach to identifying issues,
evaluating alternatives, and implementing corrective actions. High
level of self-monitoring, with a focus on continuous improvement
and taking initiative when performance adjustments are needed.
Strong adaptability, able to adjust quickly to changing priorities,
setups, or machining requirements. Excellent oral and written
communication skills, with the ability to clearly understand
instructions and explain issues or suggestions to team members.
Practiced in active listening and collaborative teamwork, always
ready to support others and contribute to a productive shop
environment. Detail-oriented near vision and problem sensitivity,
with a keen eye for recognizing potential issues before they impact
quality or safety. Demonstrated deductive reasoning, able to apply
general machining principles to solve specific, real-world
manufacturing challenges. Comfortable using Microsoft Windows-based
applications such as Excel, Word, and Outlook to support
documentation, communication, and reporting tasks. Minimum
Requirements Strong knowledge of Mazak, Haas and Fadal machining
centers Knowledge of metal forming. Knowledge of 2D and 3D CNC
programming, especially MasterCam Good Communicator Knowledge of
good machine maintenance practices High School education. Excellent
print reading skills Familiar with GD&T tolerances as listed on
manufacturing prints and interpreting same. (5) Years’ experience
in a machine shop environment working as a CNC programmer and
machinist. Knowledge of ISO 9000 operating practices
